Smoking

Recently, several neighboring universities have transitioned to smoke-free campuses. These decisions at peer institutions have forced Boston University to reconsider its smoking policies. Smoking does have serious detrimental impacts on the health of our student body, the comfort of nonsmokers and our relationship with our neighbors in this city. However, one of the greatest aspects of Boston University is choice. Here, students have more choices in academic life, in student life and in residence life than at any other university. No one in this community wants to deny choice, especially when it will alienate so many students that would otherwise enrich Boston University in countless ways. Therefore, the Boston University Student Union will lead a student initiative to find a proper balance that respects both the choices of smokers and nonsmokers.
